While many feminists’ attention remains focused solely on gender identity, issues like access to clean air and water, adequate food and shelter, quality social assistance through health, education and welfare services remain central to good lives for women and children.
If you are a union member, or you were before you retired, or you would be if you had a paid job, or if it was easier or even possible in your workplace, there’s a good chance the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions | Te Kauai Kaimahi represents your interests, at least in a general sense.
The NZCTU is in the middle of consulting with workers and organisations on their strategy Building a Better Future. According to the consultation website,
“New Zealand is already the best country in which to be in business according to the World Bank. The CTU also wants to create an economy in which this is the best country in the world to be a worker and kaimahi.”
The Fabian Society is hosting the CTU’s economist Craig Renney and policy analyst Diana Russell to present the Council’s Alternative Economic Strategy to the first Fabian Society meeting of 2023 – behind Unity Books at 5.30pm on Wednesday 18 January.
Renney in particular is proposing significant changes to working life, though many would argue the benefits accrue mainly to the already comfortable. Whatever your thoughts on that, this is an opportunity to hear from people with who will influence Labour policy on some important economic and social measures.
