Women’s Liberation Aotearoa would like to congratulate Renee Gerlich on publishing the fantastic seven volume Brief, Complete Herstory series. It’s a wonderful series, and beautifully illustrated. Here’s her press release in full:
“On October 22, feminist writer Renee Gerlich finished publishing her seven volume Brief, Complete Herstory series, a female centred, colour illustrated history of the world from the Big Bang to the present day. If you have ever wanted a succinct, digestible overview of history, here it is: this set of books offers a continuous narrative from Mother Earth and Sea, which explores the origins of life, the evolution of early humans (and also functions as a very useful biology primer) – to Neoliberalism, which clearly explains this complex topic and the impact of globalisation and corporatisation on women.
In between these two books, Book 2, Matriarchy and the Creation of Patriarchy, explores matriarchal cultures from all around the world and summarises Gerda Lerner’s Creation of Patriarchy – and book 3, God, opens with discussion of the woman-centred cultures of Old Europe and ends with the Crusades (we meet some fascinating medieval feminists along the way!). Books 4 and 5 (Capitalism and Empire) look at the industrial revolution and the work of women who resisted slavery, capitalism and patriarchy – from women on slave ships, to Harriet Tubman, Buffalo Calf Road Woman, the suffragists, Emma Goldman, Rosa Luxemburg and more. Book 6 examines women’s responses to nineteenth and twentieth century independence movements around the world, and each book features a bibliography to treasure on its own!
